Genesis LA (GLA)

Our Strategy

At Genesis LA, we believe that community development finance requires close collaboration between lenders and the organizations working on the ground in underserved communities. Therefore, we work hands-on with nonprofits, small businesses, and women and minority-owned enterprises, by blending our financial products with capacity building efforts so that we can more effectively transform underserved communities. This strategic approach is designed to grow and strengthen organizations that serve our Los Angeles market, yet struggle to access the capital they need to expand their delivery of goods and services. Our business model focuses on providing innovative financial solutions for these types of borrowers and their projects, with the goal of growing the next generation of community development infrastructure within Los Angeles County and providing opportunity for new community development models to be tested and hopefully expanded.

We offer flexible financing designed to move high-impact community and economic development projects forward. We provide this financing through direct loans and investments from our internally managed Genesis Community Investment Fund (GCIF) and through New Markets Tax Credits (NMTC).

Our lending and investing efforts are highly collaborative. Our borrowers are partners in our efforts to improve the lives of low-income individuals and we work hand-in-hand to prepare them to be borrowers of our capital; to strengthen the financial viability of their projects; and to advance new approaches to community development. We provide development services that include financial structuring, capital raising, and acquisition/construction assistance.

By delivering capital and building capacity, we support organizations, stakeholders, and projects that are committed to bringing about positive community change, including jobs, affordable housing, goods, services, and economic growth that directly improve the lives of low-income people.
